About this tool

Age sounds like a subtraction, but months have different lengths, so "how old am I" needs a calendar, not a stopwatch. This calculator counts whole years first, then whole months, then the days left over, borrowing days from the previous month when needed — the same way you would count on a paper calendar. The totals below (months, weeks, days, hours) are exact counts between the two dates rather than rounded averages. Leave "as of" on live to see your age ticking in real time, or pick any past or future date to answer questions like "how old was I on my wedding day" or "how old will I be when the loan ends".

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator handle leap years and short months?

It works with real calendar dates, so 29 February and 30-day months are counted as they actually occur. Years and months are counted first; the remaining days are measured against the length of the month before the reference date, which matches how age is normally stated.

What happens if I was born on 29 February?

In years that are not leap years there is no 29 February, so the next-birthday countdown uses 28 February. Your age in years still increases once per year, exactly as it would on an official document.

Can I calculate age at a date in the past or the future?

Yes. Untick "Update as of to current time", then choose any date in the "As of" field. The result shows the age on that day, which is useful for school entry cut-offs, insurance forms, or checking an age on a historical date.

Why do "total months" and "total days" not match years × 12 or years × 365?

Total months is years × 12 plus the extra whole months, while total days is the real number of days between the two dates, including every leap day. Multiplying by 365 would drift by roughly one day every four years.

Which time zone is used for "today"?

The calculator uses the date and time of your own device. If you are near midnight or travelling, the day of the week and the day count can differ from someone in another time zone by one day.
