About this tool

Large images are the most common reason web pages load slowly and email attachments bounce. This compressor re-encodes a photo or graphic in your browser as JPEG, WebP or PNG and lets you drag a quality slider while watching the file size and a preview update. JPEG and WebP are lossy: lowering quality discards detail the eye is less likely to notice, and settings around 70–85 usually cut size dramatically with little visible change. WebP is typically smaller than JPEG at the same quality. PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does not apply to it. The image never leaves your device, which also makes the tool suitable for private photos and documents.

What quality setting should I use?
For photos on websites, 70–85 is a good range: files shrink a lot while artefacts stay hard to see. Go lower for thumbnails or previews, and keep 90+ for images that will be edited further or printed.
Should I choose JPEG, WebP or PNG?
Use WebP for photos on the web where supported, JPEG for maximum compatibility with email and older software, and PNG for screenshots, logos or images that need transparency and sharp edges.
Why did my PNG get bigger instead of smaller?
PNG is lossless, so re-encoding in the browser cannot discard detail and may not compress as tightly as a specialised optimiser. Convert photos to JPEG or WebP for real savings, or use a dedicated PNG optimiser for graphics.
What happens to transparency when I choose JPEG?
JPEG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose WebP or PNG if you need to keep a transparent background.
Does compressing remove photo metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding through the canvas drops EXIF data such as camera model and GPS location. That is good for privacy, but note that orientation and colour-profile information are also not carried over.
